Timothy Bair
Bio: Timothy Bair (b. 1996, Taichung) is a Taiwanese American artist whose work moves between personal narrative and collective history. Through drawing, painting, and sculpture, Bair traces the ways culture is learned, inherited, and reshaped. His imagery often emerges from the subtle distortions and atmospheric biases that color his experience of the world as a person with a disability. Selected solo exhibitions include Bedtime Stories at Mark Christopher Gallery in Toronto (2020), Various Small Fires at Launch F18 in New York City (2022), and most recently As the Mountain Slides into the Sea at River Art Gallery in his hometown of Taichung, Taiwan (2025).

Artist Statement:
Timothy Bair reflects on distance, memory, and the quiet ache of disconnection from the landscapes that shaped him. As a disabled artist, he can no longer physically access the mountains, forests, trails, and rivers of his hometown in Taiwan. He returns to these places through drawing. The works are not attempts at replication, but acts of honoring the emotional and spiritual resonance those landscapes continue to hold. For Bair, they now exist in a different register: partially unreachable, partially luminous. They are not fully present, yet not entirely gone. His drawings create space for places his body cannot reach but that remain vividly within him.
Using still outlines and restrained color, Bair conveys longing and distance. The dense patterning and use of a scattered perspective within many compositions is deliberate, reflecting both the loss of direct access and the way memory flattens what was once immediate and alive. Drawing becomes a form of care: a way to sustain connection, tracing what still matters even when it cannot be physically reached.
